It consists of a cell, a perforated disk and a plunger. A U-tube glass manometer is mounted on a steel frame. The kit is supplied with a rubber aspirator and a filter paper pack.

The apparatus is used to determine the fineness of cement based on the specific surface expressed as total surface area in square centimeters per gram of cement. The Blaine apparatus draws a defined volume of air through a prepared cement bed of defined porosity. This is a variable flow pattern air.
